Trends: keep in the know.
This article began as a lighthearted commentary on the similarities between a recent publicity photo of Lady Gaga and a rear view snapshot of our beloved Roger, from American Dad in full curvy drag
You may already recognize the neo-nerd-hipster-style of Gaga’s photographer, the talented Terry Richardson (seen here with Miley). You may already recognize his work from the many Polaroids taken post-photoshoots standing (usually shirtless) alongside his subjects.
Enough background, the point of this blog is no matter high or low we may consider out art, we never benefit from from being completely insulated from what is happening in the world. Watch trends, be aware of new technologies, flip through design magazines and humor blogs alike. It doesn’t mean you have to follow a trend and wear skinny jeans…but at least KNOW about skinny jeans.
I bet Gaga, with declining sales and interest from the buying public (growing weary from a little too much “weird”) would have loved to have this straight-up “sexy” shot to have only been that. Not a virtual recreation of a cartoon alien ass dressed as Laura Van der Boobin.
To put it simply, I believe it is imperative to be aware of popular culture and trends, even if you don’t follow them. This is imperative for anyone in the creative field to know what your work may be evocative of, even if it is a mere coincidence.
But frankly, I’m noticing the importance of this notion even with the age gap between my parents and my nieces. If you don’t want to walk around with your face in a smartphone, fine. Just at least learn the basics of use so you don’t look wildly out of touch when asked to snap a picture with someone’s iPhone. Keep up with technology, trends and what is happening in the world, even if you choose to ignore it.
So….back to the funny
Terry’s latest shot of lady gaga was supposed to be sexy but it just reminds of roger from american dad, who also (in his mind) is supposed to be sexy. Decide for yourself.
