speaking of linda evans, does anyone remember those hysterical/scary infomercials she did back in the 90's? by the way, due to the miracle of science linda looks better today than she did 10 years ago...and rejuvinique probably didn't have anything to do with it.

i'm kind of embarrassed to admit this, but i went to this play on friday night with my friend brad. it wasn't a trainwreck...more like watching preserved vintage race cars going 15 miles an hour around the track. the writing was so weak and frankly outdated (jokes about a housekeeper "picking cotton"!! are you serious?) that the only real pleasure was just getting to see joan and linda and their wigs on stage. by the way, the audience was all older republican couples and smattering of gay guys. interesting that this cast brings together that demographic combination ...

wow, so that is what a vacation feels like? i took a few days off over the thanksgiving break and didn't travel or do any business work..shocking! on sunday i started designing again and i felt like new! i was able to solve a few design delimas that had been bothering me in no time flat. sometimes we need to turn our brains off...or at least distract them with different information for a few days.

we went down to the inn at little washington for thanksgiving and had a fabulous meal as always. my first course was a peregrine concoction of oxtail consomme, white truffles and a poached egg from some bird i had never heard of...i have no idea why i ordered it but i was so intrigued that i had to. during the first few tastes time apparently slowed. plus, the bottle of chateau margaux was kicking in. man, i love that place.

by the way, i attempted this on sunday. results were good, not as smooth as theirs, but for my first time handling a rutabaga, i give myself one gold star.

how late is this review? way late!
but not too late since you have 4 whole more days to see it!! :)

my fair lady at signature theatre is their best production yet. the combination a sparse dark stage setting, very similar to the art direction of nevermore (minus the whole red-death-plague bit), with such a light frothy play is quite captivating. also, signature has fun with the whole, umm, "bachelor" lifestyle...especially with all the boys in the background.

i wasn't initially convinced of the eliza doolittle casting since her initial reveal introduces her with the most annoying cockney accent that you've ever heard...i almost threw my playbill at her...but of course this ended up being endearing in her character. not a beauty, but she ends up cleaning up well and delivering some great laughs. the fact that she isn't an audrey hepburn ends up working so much better, since audrey hepburn as a pauper just looks like a supermodel with dirt on her face.

now stop reading this and go buy a ticket.

kimberly wilson had her book launch for hip tranquil chick last thursday. although kimberly was at the podium and signing away, the real star of the night was her pug louis, decked out in rhinestones and leopard print. take a look at her book, you can find it on amazon...it is filled with lifestyle advice on everything from yoga to finances.

at this point, to call frank gehry a genious is being trite at best...but watch sketches of frank gehry if you are already a fan, or would love to know more about the architect. netflix it today.

there is an a-hole "critic" interviewed in the documentary who calls gehry's work "logotechure" (which barely works as a word) and in the end, is not an insult. it is all about branding, and frank knows it. what is the problem with this anyway? how many boring, glass and steel buildings are popping up downtown that will be forgettable at best? at least gehry is trying to insert artistic vision, in a field that has already had the majority of the basic problem solved. at this point it isn't about just providing shelter, but evoking an emotion and challenging the new (and old) aesthetic.

corteo is a pleasant night out. it has moments of brilliance, like the swinging chandeliers, a fun childlike bed bouncing stunt, and these rings acrobats climb in and roll about in...but beyond those moments, the show can be spotty at best. the best part of the night of course, for me at least, is the wonderful circular tent; figuring out the engineering and mechanics of all the hanging angels and the balloon-suspended tiny lady all occurring within this temporary stage-in-the-round on the old dc convention center's new blacktop.

there are some weird, below-cirque standard scenes: for example a dorf inspired golf scene that is out of place and flat out lame. the high wire act features a woman giving attitude while on a unicycle...not an easy feat. the fact that she has a guide wire kills a bit of the thrill during some of her hulahoop stunts up high, but she makes up for it with lots glitter and mall runway head snaps (think bloomindale's teen fashion show).

anyway...we left at intermission and had a great dinner at acadiana. i think that was the best part. i think rob would agree since half way through the first half i turned to him and he was out cold.

here's a picture of dorf...hopefully this will be the last time he is mentioned on this weblog.

the queen is an excellent, excellent film. scott and i caught it at georgetown tonight and i had to recommend it immediately. i also saw borat this weekend, but everyone already knows to go see that...

helen mirren is great as the queen, and provides a lifelike understanding to what has appeared to be a waxwork way of living. i'm ready to start tea time and "take the call in the study". on the way home, we were trying to figure out why the queen's husband isn't referred to as the king...wikipedia, here i come.

has anyone else noticed that the kitchen atcafe saint-ex has really stepped up recently? simple, but delicious dishes - like the current best eggs benedicts (including a fried green tomato version) in the city or the steak at dinner time. saint-ex has always had great atmosphere, but it wonderful that chef seaver has finally created a diverse menu with plenty of local produce, much of it organic.

i picked up banksy's book, wall and piece, this weekend. pages and pages of incredible street art and altered masterpieces. i think he is fascinating and the craftsmanship of his stencils is amazing. our local borf had nothing on this guy...

i forgot to post this!

disco didn't appreciate his ghost costume, but by the end of the night it kind of looked like couture with the shredded edges. betsey's glitter pumpkins were hot and i finally figured out what to do with the extra chandalier crystals. we sat on the front porch and worked the fog machine to scare up the scene for the 30 kids that by on halloween.

sorry for the delayed posting!

i met david last night to at the duplex diner to watch the election results. it amazing to see everyone walking by in adams morgan cheering as they looked in the window. this city needs some fresh faces in it and it is refreshing to see that the country agrees.
