after my yoga class this morning in capitol hill, i walked over to eastern market and found some wonderful surprises. the photograph shown above is by val proudkii (it is now on my living room wall). his work has an absolute mood to it - the way a gray rainy day is pensive and comforting in a weird way, pushing the comfortable edge of solitude. stop by and see his work online here. this piece really struck me as fabulous and heartbreaking all at once. i love that tension.
recognize the location? the prada mothership in soho.
also, caitlin phillips is doing some of the most original work i have seen in awhile in accessories. check out her highly tailored and wildly original handbags here. she takes recycled books and turns them into purses and her workmanship is impeccable.

although it kind of reminds me of the muppets/sesame street disco albums i listened to when i was a kid (which probably i consider to be a good thing), the new scissor sisters ta-dah is worth grabbing on itunes. also, nelly furtado's whole new album is fantastic.
did you hear how all of these lame middle america record stores (when was the last time you bought anything at a sam goody???) aren't going to carry the scissor sister's album because jake shears, the lead singer, complained that cd prices were to high these days.
another music note: anyone with the guts (or ignorance) to name their cd "Bidet" (b'day) gets my attention. i had given up on beyonce with her last boring solo album but this new one is a banger. best track: 'irreplaceable' - a tlc sounding track that works well to constrast the rest of the album's solid, jay-z brand sound.
it's great - drag queens everywhere will be performing this album (especially ring the alarm) for years...but probably not as well as this masterpiece:

so i'm walking around politics and prose trying to remember the name of an author i heard being interviewed a couple weeks ago on npr...i ask the guys behind the counter and all i can remember is the name "david" and the topic of the book...we search and search and even search on the npr web site but come up empty handed. i end up browsing and picking up a couple other titles: the new brad meltzer (which is great) and another book i picked out because i liked the cover (that's how i choose my wines too by the way).
so get this.
i'm at home that night and i start reading the second book and it all seems very familiar...i look at the author's name and it is "david"...i run to the web and look up the author and indeed - i unconsciously (or accidentally) selected the very book i was looking for all along! how awesome is that.
fyi, david rakoff was the author and "don't get too comfortable" is the title.

pain is temporary, finishing is forever!
that's me slapping my mom's hand while running past her and rob at the race in philly yesterday. we had a great time in philly: eating at ralph's in little italy and enjoying the best room service on the planet at 6am at the four seasons.
