sea

mom and i had a fantastic time this weekend in miami. the weather was amazing - i could live down there. you don't realize how stuffy dc can be until you spend time in miami...but i guess palm trees, steamy weather, and latin energy loosen anyone up.

running, however, was quite a challenge in miami. i think i ran half my normal distance and had to head on back to the hotel. the sun really drains even though it starts out feeling fantastic. i wanted to just sit by the pool and soak it all up, but since i have two months until my half-marathon in philly...no rest for me!

apparently madonna was staying right next door to us and we missed her while at the beach because she was covered in towels from head to toe. i'll post pictures from the concert tomorrow.

!vamos gaby!

gabriella sabatini, who is apparently even more beautiful now, was enducted into the tennis hall of fame today.

you know, steffi is totally cute these days - life with agassi has been good for her. she'll never be gaby, but she's glammed up what she's got. then again, she dominated the sport so nobody gets everything, do they...

in honor of gabriella's hall of fame honor, i bring you an homage to the true source of her tennis power: her headband

we were going for a newsroom/"extra, extra"/vintage vibe and i think it and i think it all turned out quite well.

katrina fundraiser/art show

district fine arts held a fundraiser last night to benefit artists whose homes and studios were damaged in the hurricane. the show is being presented by 6 artists from jackson, mississippi, and each one of them had an amazing story to tell. be sure to go see the artwork, i'm sure it will be at dfa for at least a couple weeks.

it is worth a trip to the gallery just to see the resin covered canvases by william goodman. drop by his site and take look around as well - some really beautiful artwork and the site itself is a pleasure to browse. the canvases are mixed media with some image transfers and painting, but the real craftsmanship comes from the layers and layers of resin which creates a candy like surface - quite a juxtaposition when taken in contrast to the art's content: devastion after the hurricane.

jason markow's work is also worth checking out. his artwork is shown above, but you should visit the gallery to spend a little time with his 'mogg' character paintings. the mogg is a cross between a devil and an angel - your choice. are the hurricanes a destructive force? or a rebirth? his work concentrates on that fine line.

madonna in philadelphia

we made record time to philly the other night, even though i almost gave myself an anxiety attack from the traffic on the BW parkway...trying to get to a concert where you have 5th row seats while at a stand still in rush hour traffic does not a calm experience make.

the philly crowd was way rowdier than the nyc audience, so there was a fun palpable energy in the wachovia center. also, being in front of 15,000 screaming people is an experience to itself. being so close to the stage makes you part of the show, instead of watching it from afar. you can't take in the overall effect, but you get amazing glimpses into the performers and the instensity. you can see how hard everyone is working, you get eye contact and you get to see the working details of backstage choreography. madonna is tiny in person and probably the fittest person on the planet.

so much fun. next stop miami -with my mom!

also, thanks to fred for making my custom (leo)tard shirt. it was a big hit and got a big smile from stuart.

david and i caught the late show of the devil wears prada tuesday night and were not disappointed. actually, the movie is significantly better than the book due to the more balanced story telling - you understand both characters and appreciate both of their struggles (but of course we were rooting for the "villian", but that's to be expected).

sunday nyc madonna

david and i met in nyc to see madonna. that's us outside MSG watching the cast of characters arriving for the show. we have been to most of her past shows together, as well as kylie in manchester last year, so we had to catch the confessions tour to add to the list. we were not disappointed. i did not take out my camera (to david's delight and at his request) so i was truly able to enjoy the concert...i'm usually preoccupied with getting the best shot and i end up missing the experience.

not this time.

we were amazed, bewildered, and high on life by the end of the concert. what a rush. there are even songs no one cares about in this tour, but madonna's performance blows you away that you can't leave your seat. the entire arena leaves giddy and drenched in sweat from 2 hours of solid dancing. i think, no- i know- i even liked it better than re-invention. next stop, philly, and i WILL bring my camera to that one since rob and i are in the 6th row.

here's the one shot i got from our madison square garden performance.

brooklyn/manhattan trip
my friend deb and i hit the design shops in brooklyn this weekend. apparently a new neighborhood of designers and their hipster following have been driven out of manhattan by high rents into the williamsburg and park slope areas of brooklyn. blog pal design*sponge gave me the heads up to all the design shops in the area, with my favorite being the future perfect, where i picked up a gorgeous frame by industrial designer harry allen.

how amazing was it to get brunch at the cute (and air conditioned) apartment 138 for only $10?!!! including a mimosa? brooklyn was a stinking bargain compared to dc. here are some sights from the weekend. a little high gloss manhattan and brooklyn grit mixed together - a perfect combination for a quick trip to nyc. checkout the graffitti...apparently i've already been to brooklyn and signed it!

the self-portrait/window shot has a great surprise...look for the polish grandmother who was watching us go by. we never saw more than her eyes and a few fingers, but we could tell she was smiling and enjoying her day watching over brooklyn.

oh, i also hit the new apple store on 5th and it is really well done. a little too packed with tourists to want to hang out in there, but the natural light let in through the glass logo box/entrance really makes for an improved experience for a computer store.

i'll write about the concert later today...

lima on k street is worth a visit. fantastic food and horrible service. if the second part doesn't bother you - give it a try. i have a feeling they are working out some kinks because there were plenty of servers moving around, but the coordination with the kitchen seemed to be missing. it didn't feel on purpose...if that makes any sense. at least a guy in a suit kept coming over and asking if we were having a good time and dammit if a guy in a suit doesn't help any situation! it does!

lima=beautiful salads + empanadas + soups + fish, with a side of great people watching.

also, we finally tried buck's fishing & camping last night with chris and mandy. i've always loved the name. i think i still do - i'm just not sure if i love the restaurant. i'm into the concept of a chef-driven experience....in concept... but the rigidity of the menu in reality is annoying. a 10lb slab of beef with no sides is oppressive and we had to beg to get a bit of the cheesey grits that came with another dish. don't make me beg when i'm paying you to feed me. it won't make me come back and i won't write nice things.

that being said -they do offer really nice starters: fresh heirlooms + mozarella and fun deviled eggs.

ADDENDUM: you know that feeling when you wake up in the middle of the night after eating a whole bag of popcorn at the movies? the sodium hangover? i woke up with a heavy dose of it last night - just remember i had the steak if you go to buck's...
