the ancient ruins in athens are really spectacular, but the entire time we were there, i could only imagine the comedy of errors that awaits next summer for the olympics. it seems as though the entire city is scrambling to create a tourist infrastructure for the first time. somehow, they have managed to go for years without simple signage, indicating where to go and how to find tourist sites (and on-site explanations at the sites in english or any language for that matter - thank god my mom was smart enough to bring some excellent guide books). once we got to the base of the acropolis mountain (avoid our mistake of following the signs, they only lead to terror - take a cab instead), there began the choose your own adventure to get to the top. follow the road? no! that's only for curators. follow the sidewalk? no! that's under construction. follow the tracks from a bull dozer and leap over random 5,000 year old artifacts? yes! just don't let anyone see you. the ruins themselves are not delineated by any signage and the only way you know where to go and where not to go, is if you take a step in the incorrect direction, a man blows a whistle at you, and then you pick another way up. once you get to the top, whatever your struggle entailed, it is well worth the trip. it was amazing. click here for some photographs from greece.

we just got back from LA, where we stayed at the hippest dump in town, the standard. the trip was for my friend caroline's wedding (including a traditional chinese banquet reception), where i got to run into some of my old architecture schoolmates. other highlights included a midnight street spotting of a puffy-lipped bobby trendy, the amazing richard meier designed getty center, and the ability to get great mexican food on every corner.

i just returned from a trip to greece and spain to visit my mother, so i have tons of blogs to publish that i wrote along the way. i also have a lot of great photographs that i'll be uploading soon. my 17" powerbook worked like a charm, but my grand plan of watching dvds on the plane didn't work out so well since this laptop is not compatible with coach class ...it's bigger than the tray tables...this is not a travelling laptop, good thing i only use it in the kitchen normally. i took over 300 digital shots with this and overall i was happy with the new camera. however, digital cams have nothing on disposables when trying to snap something quick- the camera's delay after pushing the shutter button caused me to lose a bunch of action shots of some colorful japanese tourists...as long as i stood still and my subject matter was not in motion, everything turned out beautifully...and the blurry images i will consider art.
